Men's Fragrance Discovery Set: 10 Dupes, One Tin

Men's Fragrance Discovery Set: 10 Dupes, One Tin

Buying men's cologne in New Zealand usually goes one of two ways: you spend $180 on a bottle you smelled for four seconds in a rush at the store, or you keep re-buying the same thing you've worn since 2014. Our men's fragrance discovery set exists to kill both of those options. Ten of our most-loved masculine-leaning fragrance dupes, packed into one solid giftable tin, for $45.

It's the same idea as our women's Discovery Set — which has quietly become one of our best sellers — just built for him. And it landed today.

Why a discovery set beats a full bottle every time

Fragrance is the only thing we buy that we can't properly test in the shop. Scent changes over the first few hours as it warms on your skin, and it smells different on you than it does on the tester card, the shop assistant, or your mate. Thirty seconds at a counter tells you almost nothing.

What our customers keep telling us is exactly this — that the whole point is being able to live with a scent for a few days before committing. One reviewer summed it up better than we did: being able to test each scent over time and then decide on one (or more) to buy in a bigger size.

Ten samples at $45 works out at $4.50 a scent. One full-size designer bottle is forty times that. If nine of the ten aren't for you, you've still found the one — and that's the job done.

What's actually in the tin

Ten masculine-leaning fragrance dupes, each a Neat interpretation of a scent you'll recognise:

  • SAVIOUR — compare to aroma Dior Sauvage
  • VICTORY — compare to aroma Creed Aventus
  • PRIDE — compare to aroma Paco Rabanne 1 Million
  • PROTECTOR — compare to aroma YSL 'Y'
  • KNOWLEDGE — compare to aroma Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb
  • ADVENTURE — compare to aroma Davidoff Cool Water
  • FURY — compare to aroma Dior Fahrenheit
  • PURPOSE — compare to aroma Hugo Boss
  • STRENGTH — compare to aroma Rochas Man
  • ESCAPE — compare to aroma Le Labo Santal 33 (unisex)

That spread is deliberate. Fresh and citrus-led at one end — Adventure and Protector, the two most likely to become a daily driver. Then the big crowd-pleasing spicy-sweet middle most Kiwi blokes gravitate to without quite knowing why: Saviour, Pride, Knowledge. Purpose and Strength cover the classic, dependable, nobody-ever-complains end of the shelf. And at the far end, Victory and Escape are the grown-up ones — woody, quieter, the scents people ask about rather than notice.  Fury is the outlier, and the sleeper. People either love it on the first wear or come back to it in week two and change their minds.

Perfume oil, not a spray — and why that changes things

Every sample in the tin is a highly concentrated perfume oil rather than a spray, and that changes how it behaves on skin.

  • It lasts longer. A spray lifts scent up and out — big opening, faster fade. Oil sits on the skin and releases slowly through the day. This is the single thing customers mention most often when they compare ours to the designer original they were wearing before.
  • It sits closer. Perfume oil is more of a lean-in scent than a room-filling one, which plenty of men actively prefer. You smell good to the person you're talking to, not to the whole meeting room.
  • It's easy on skin. Nothing to sting on application. Our fragrances are phthalate-free, hypoallergenic, vegan and cruelty-free.

Worth knowing for the next step: our 10ml Rollers are the same pure perfume oil as the samples in the tin. Our 30ml Parfum Sprays are alcohol-based — that's exactly what gives a spray its lift and projection. Same scent, two different ways of wearing it, and which one he ends up preferring is genuinely down to taste rather than one being better than the other.

A better gift than a bottle nobody asked for

Roughly speaking, the men's tin gets bought two ways: by men who want to find their own scent, and by partners who have given up trying to guess. Both work. Fragrance is a notoriously hard gift to get right — a discovery set hands the decision back to him without you having to interrogate him about base notes first.

It also solves the Father's Day / birthday / Christmas problem of wanting to spend $45 and have it feel like more than $45. The tin is solid, it's black, it' practical and reusable, and it doesn't need wrapping.

Found the one? Here's what happens next

Once he's landed on a favourite, every scent in the tin is available in a full size:

  • 10ml Roller — $29. The same pure perfume oil as the tin. Precise, travel-friendly, lives in a jacket pocket or the glovebox.
  • 30ml Parfum Spray — $42. Alcohol-based for more lift and projection. The everyday bottle for the bathroom shelf

Men's fragrance FAQs

How much fragrance is in each sample?

Each is a 1ml vial — enough for several days (or weeks) of proper wear, not a single dab. That's the whole point: you need to wear a scent more than once to know whether you actually like it or just liked the idea of it.

Are these the same as the designer fragrances?

No, and we'd never claim they are. They're our own interpretations — designer-inspired, made here, at a fraction of the price. Because the samples are perfume oil rather than a spray, they may not open identically to the original, but they hold their character for far longer on the skin.

The little vial fasteners are fiddly. Any trick?

There is a little trick to opening the sample vials.  "Push" rather than "pull", and the stopper will open cleanly.  I recommend folding or pushing the lid over the side of the vial, like so:

Will these suit women too?

Absolutely. "Masculine-leaning" is a starting point, not a rule. Escape is genuinely unisex — we'd never file it as one or the other — and Adventure gets worn by everyone, as does Knowledge. If you'd rather start elsewhere, the original Fragrance Discovery Set has our ten best-selling scents overall.

Can I return it if the scents aren't for me?

Fragrance samples are non-refundable for hygiene reasons — which is exactly why we'd rather sell you ten $4.50 samples than one $42 bottle you don't get on with.

Do you ship across New Zealand?

Yes — we're based in New Plymouth, Taranaki, and ship nationwide with NZ Post.
